Designing a Classroom

I found this article at the Suite 101.com the insightful writer for the informed readers. I believe this article is interesting because she talked about today’s students, the 21st century students. She stated, “While technological advances influence the economy as well as social networking, it plays a big part in our schools and education too. Today's classroom must meet the needs of its 21st century students. This includes creating a flexible, comfortable learning space, integrating modern technology and instilling a sense of community.”  She also talked about the lighting, desks and furniture, color and space. “Classrooms should feature natural light and color schemes that are visually and creatively stimulating, circular desks or flexible, comfortable chairs and furniture, and larger learning spaces that can be separated into a smaller, intimate setting for small group projects.” I agree with her that classrooms and schools should be attractive to students because nowadays students are more open and they already seeing and knowing about styles, beautiful and more. Her article divided into three section; technology, lighting and community. She also stated “72 percent of U.S. middle school students spend more than three hours a day in front of the TV, using their cell phone or on the computer. While this may make some throw up their hands in frustration, educators can use this information in order to design a classroom that integrates technology, thus furthering education and growth. Consider incorporating wireless internet and laptops into the classroom with access to the school network, library resources and the internet as well as educational games and software.” I am strongly agreed to use the technology in the classroom such as, blackboard, blogs, and emails. A second point is “Use natural light whenever possible or set up adjustable, mood lighting that isn't too harsh on the eyes.” This is an environment friendly method and it is always good choice. It is healthier for both teachers and students. Last point is the community engagement. “Today's modern classroom is all about flexibility. The classroom design should allow for the teacher to present material in an engaging way, easily hand out learning material as well as allow the teacher to connect with each student. Setting up a flexible, open design classroom fosters a sense of community among students as well as their instructor.” As an educator, we need to change the school atmosphere to blend with our 21 century students.
